Computers, Internet, & WiFi
The full text version of the Computer Lab and Internet Use Policy adopted by the Library Board on September 4, 2008 is available at the Circulation Desk.
Guidelines
The Mountain Home Public Library is pleased to provide public use computer stations with Internet access. Library filtration of the Internet is in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
- The library accepts no responsibility for failure of filtering software to block specific sites.
- The library staff reserves the right to terminate an Internet session and suspend computer lab use at any time for any reason. Use of the library's computer lab and Internet connection is a privilege, not a right. Patrons may appeal staff decisions through the Library Director or the Library Board of Trustees. Ask at the Circulation Desk for more information.
- Users must be aware they are working in a public environment with people of all ages and may not engage in any activity which is illegal, not appropriate to the library setting or community standards, or interferes with another's right to use library services and resources.
- Most computer lab stations allow 1 person per computer and are clearly marked. To work with others at a dual-use station, you must be logged on by the staff at the Circulation Desk.
- Your computer priviledges will be suspended if you use another patron's card to log into the lab.
- Those waiting for computer time may not gather in or behind lab areas.
Computer Use
18 computers are available for public use at the library. Lab stations are available to users on a first come, first served basis. There is not guarantee of computer lab and/or Internet service at any specific time.
You will need a library borrower’s account to self-log onto computer lab stations. Children and young adults under 17 may not use a parent’s card to log on to the computer lab.
If you do not have a current library card, you will need to be logged on from the Circulation Desk and pay a fee of $1 for a block of 60 minutes. Parental approval for those under 17 is required. All temporary users must present photo ID and proof of age.
Saving Data
Users may save their data two ways:
- 3.5 inch floppy drives are available on all Public computers
- USB drives (flash or thumb drives)
- CD-ROM drives are not available.
Software
All Public computers offer the following software:
- Internet Explorer
- Windows Media Player
- Microsoft Office 2003 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Public computers in the Youth Services section offer many links to children’s game sites and to the TumbleBook Library, a collection of animated, talking picture books and TumblePuzzles. Ask at the Circulation Desk for log on information.
Printers
A black and white laser printer is available through the Computer Lab and copies can be picked up at the Circulation Desk. All computer lab copies are 10¢ per page.
- No color printer is available.
WiFi Access
If you have a PC or Mac notebook enabled with Wi-Fi, you can have high-speed access to the Internet while visiting the Mountain Home Public Library. The library's WiFi connection may only be used inside of the building or on the reading patio during normal business hours. Cable connections are also available. Ask at the Circulation Desk for details.
- The library’s Internet Policy applies to any wireless or cable Internet connection. Wi-Fi service is restricted to the area inside the library and on the patio. Connection is available during library hours only.
- Printers are not available via the wireless connection.
- Library staff cannot assist in laptop configuration. You may request a connection cable if your wireless does not recognize library settings.
- The library assumes no responsibility for virus or security protection; any alteration or interference with configuration, operation, or data files resulting from any type Internet connection; damage, theft, or loss of any kind to a user’s equipment, software, data files, or other personal property which is brought into or used on library grounds.
